Practice Your Quilting!
If you’ve never quilted or applied double-fold bias tape before (or if you want to make yourself a coordinating accessory!) we suggest testing your technique with one of our free patterns! You can make a matching dog coat, or use your scraps to make a cute potholder or eye mask! All patterns are available in our Sewing Resource Library using the password “sewjo”.

Fabric Suggestions From Core Fabrics
What You’ll Need:
- Outer layer:
- If you are making a quilt sandwich choose light to mid-weight woven fabrics such as cotton poplin, lawn, voile, chambray and broadcloth, or linen. Drapey fabrics are not recommended.
- Alternatively, for a quick and easy make, choose a pre-quilted fabric or a substantial jacquard, brocade, or similarly beefy fabric that holds its shape without a batting layer.
- Middle batting layer - quilt batting in cotton, bamboo, or wool.
- Inner layer - same as outer, or choose a smooth faced cotton in a contrast colour or pattern.
- Double fold bias tape, 3/8"–1/2" (10 mm–13 mm) wide. If you are making your own bias tape, you’ll need 1/2–1 yd (0.5–1 m) of fabric. Do not use narrow 3/8" (10 mm) tape for thick quilt sandwiches. See page 8 for bias tape yardage requirements.
- Thread in matching colour
- Optional: Sew-in snaps or snap buttons, 7 x 1/2–3/4" (12–19 mm).
- Optional: Walking foot - this helps keep layers aligned if you are quilting the fabric
